The Coxswain Grade 2 is a level down on Coxswain Grade 1, with the main difference being a Grade 2 Coxswain cannot carry passengers and can only command a vessel up to 100 KW for inboard engines.

The course fee is $2,400.00, with additional costs for specific certifications and assessments if required.

• The Long Range Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP) and
• Short Range Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) are available for $289.00.

This qualification is required to obtain an AMSA certificate of competency as a Coxswain Grade 2 NC as defined in the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D.

AMSA certification will require:

• achieving MAR10418 Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal)

sea service consisting of:

• 7 days qualifying sea service and a completed AMSA approved task book
  or
  60 days qualifying sea service
• meeting the medical and eyesight requirements specified in the NSCV Part D
• assessment by an AMSA approved assessor using the AMSA mandated practical assessment (AMPA) conducted on a vessel ≥5.0 m in length.

To gain entry into MAR10418 Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal) candidates require:

• Literacy and numeracy skills necessary for interpreting regulations and legislation and maintaining relevant records such as writing a sample report.
• 60 days qualifying sea service
• An intermediate level of fitness and all students be physically fit to carry out all the roles and responsibilities of a coxswain on a commercial vessel under 12m within 5nm of the coastline with a propulsion power of up to 100kW for inboard engines and unlimited for outboard engines as described under the National Standards for Commercial Vessels – Part D.
• Students should also be able to swim (any stroke) a minimum of 50 metres fully clothed.

Language, Literacy, and Numeracy

It is a requirement of this course that all enrolling students undertake a language, literacy and numeracy assessment.

Technology

As some of the delivery of the course is on-line and all resources are contained in a dedicated learner portal, students must have access to a computer (with Microsoft Office 365 software).

Note: Students will require basic computer skills to complete the course without disadvantage. This includes how to access the internet, download documents, save files to a hard drive and upload files within the student portal. All students receive a Student Portal learner Guide to getting started.

Our advanced training program and online platform provide the ultimate flexibility, allowing students to study anytime and anywhere with or without internet access. Our leading portal allows you to download the course and still complete your studies without internet access. Upon returning to internet access our technology will update your platform just as if you never left .

Through our structured learning plan, you’ll progress at your own pace with access to a comprehensive Student Learning Portal. Here, you’ll find all necessary materials, online assessments, and practical observation tasks. We also incorporate directed workplace learning activities using a Task Book, which students complete on the job and authenticate through Marine Training Academy (MTA). Our trainers are available by phone Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and additional support is always accessible through our online support team.

Throughout your studies, you’ll undertake a mix of practical, oral, and theory assessments, including projects, portfolios, quizzes, and exams.

For practical training, you’ll have access to our fleet of training vessels, participating in scheduled sessions that bring your skills to life.

Marine Training Academy (MTA) recognises prior learning and work experience relevant to this qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). RPL acknowledges skills and knowledge gained from previous study, work, or life experience. Learners who believe they have competence in any specific skill areas may apply for RPL, with their trainer supporting the application process to determine eligibility. Please note that RPL does not affect course fees.

Credit Transfer

Students may also apply for a credit transfer at enrolment. Those who have AQF certification from another RTO or authenticated VET transcripts from a recognised issuing authority may receive credit for relevant units. Many students in this course may have already completed the following units as part of another maritime qualification or the MARSS00008 Shipboard Safety Skill Set:

MARF027: Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment
MARF028: Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
MARF029: Meet work health and safety requirements

 Clothing:

• Work or casual clothes for both theory and practical days

Footwear:

• Deck shoes, joggers, sandshoes or work boots (no thongs)

 Radio Day:

• 1 x Passport photo for Marine Radio course

Fight Fire Day:

• No synthetic outer clothing, socks or underwear
• Long sleeve ‘cotton’ work shirt
• Long ‘cotton’ pants or jeans
• Hair is to be tied back, if applicable

 Sea Survival Day:

• In-water sea survival clothing to include a t-shirt or shirt plus pants
• Spare set of clothes to wear after sea survival in water practical
• Lunch, a bottle of water, large towel, warm jacket, and strong large plastic bag for wet clothes

The definitive reference book for the Maritime industry and professional crew is the Australian Boating Manual by Dick Gandy. This is the course text, and your course fees include access to it.

To apply for your Certificate of Competency (industry licence), you will need to submit an application to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). This can be done at any Registered Australia Post Retail Outlet. Ensure you have met all the requirements and completed the AMSA Form 426 application form.
