For those undertaking this course as part of a commercial maritime pathway, this skill set contributes to the safety training required for working on commercial vessels. Additional requirements may apply depending on the role or certification being pursued.

Recreational participants, including boat owners and crew, will also benefit from developing practical safety and survival skills to improve confidence and preparedness on the water.

Course Overview

The Elements of Shipboard Safety Skill Set is made up of four nationally recognised units of competency that provide participants with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to respond effectively to shipboard risks, emergencies, and survival situations. This training is designed to strengthen safety awareness, improve emergency response capability, and prepare participants for the realities of working on or operating around vessels.

Units of competency included:
MARF028 – Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
MARF029 – Meet work health and safety requirements
MARF030 – Survive at sea using survival craft
MARF060 – Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment

As part of this skill set, participants will undertake practical survival activities linked to the sea survival units. These activities are designed to develop confidence, competence, and the ability to respond appropriately in demanding on-water emergency situations.

Practical activities may include:
Swimming in a group for a minimum of 50 metres, swimming 50 metres while wearing a lifejacket, towing while wearing a lifejacket for at least 25 metres, remaining afloat without a lifejacket for at least five minutes, safely jumping into the water from a height while wearing a lifejacket, boarding a life raft unassisted, and assisting others during life raft drills.

This course delivers more than theory alone. It provides participants with practical, hands-on training that supports safer decision-making, stronger emergency awareness, and greater readiness for real vessel-based situations.
