This nationally recognised course provides the core maritime knowledge and practical seamanship skills required to operate vessels under 12 metres with limited engine capacity. It’s ideal for entry-level roles in marinas, aquaculture, tourism, and small commercial operations.

Course Delivery
- Theory is completed online at your own pace via our secure learning portal
- Practical training and assessment are delivered face-to-face by experienced trainers
- Only 2 days are required at the workshop to complete all practical elements for Coxswain Grade 3
- It is beneficial, but not mandatory, to complete the online components prior to attending the practical assessment
Assessment Process
- Knowledge assessments are completed online through quizzes and written tasks
- Practical assessments are conducted in class as part of the evaluation
- Students must demonstrate required competency across both theory and practical tasks

Licensing & Regulatory Information
This course includes the full skill set required to operate as a Coxswain Grade 3 Near Coastal, as defined in Marine Order 505 by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).
To meet AMSA’s eligibility requirements, students must successfully complete the following four accredited units:
- MARF060 – Survive at sea using survival craft
- MARF028 – Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
- MARF029 – Meet work health and safety requirements
- HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid (must be completed externally and provided as evidence)
Upon successful completion of all required units, students will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the MARSS00048 Skill Set. This statement is used when applying to AMSA for a Coxswain Grade 3 Certificate of Competency (CoC).
Please note: AMSA may have additional eligibility criteria such as medical fitness or sea service requirements. It is your responsibility to ensure you meet these before applying for your CoC.
