MAR20324 Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1)

This qualification allows you to command and operate a vessel less than 12 metres in length in inshore or designated waters, with unlimited outboard propulsion or inboard engines up to 500 kW. With a Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal certificate, you may also:
  • Operate as a tender or auxiliary vessel within 3 nautical miles of a parent vessel in the EEZ
  • Act as a chief mate or deck watchkeeper on vessels less than 24 metres in inshore waters
  • Perform duties of a General Purpose Hand NC, Coxswain Grade 2 NC, or Coxswain Grade 3 NC

Course Delivery:

  • It is beneficial, but not mandatory, to complete the online components prior to attending the practical assessment

Assessment Process:

  • Students must demonstrate required competency across both theory and practical tasks

Course Requirements & AMSA Certification

To successfully complete the MAR20324 Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal), students must:

  • Complete all required core and elective units, including practical assessments
  • Demonstrate competency in vessel operations, emergency response, seamanship, navigation, and basic engineering tasks
  • Engage with the online learning materials and participate in practical workshops
  • Maintain active attendance and complete assessments as guided by the trainer

To obtain your Coxswain Grade 1 Certificate of Competency (CoC) from AMSA, you must:

  • Hold a valid HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid certificate (completed externally)
  • Pass an AMSA Medical Assessment (Form AMSA 1850) conducted by an AMSA-approved medical provider
  • Provide evidence of the required sea service (refer to AMSA guidelines)
  • Successfully complete the MAR20324 training program
  • Lodge your application for the Certificate of Competency at an Australia Post outlet
  • Apply to Marine Training Academy for issuance of your Interim Certificate of Competency (ICOC)
  • Ensure your assessor sights all required documents prior to ICOC issuance

Note: AMSA licensing and application fees are not included in the course price and must be paid directly to AMSA.
