The Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal) is ideal for those looking to start a career on the water. This nationally recognised qualification allows you to:

• Command and operate vessels up to 12 metres in length
• Use outboard engines of any power or inboard engines up to 100 kW
• Operate in sheltered waters, rivers, lakes, and within 05 nautical miles from the coast
• Perform a range of tasks including navigation, vessel handling, basic engineering, and safety

Course Fees, Enrolment & Requirements

Please note: AMSA licensing and application fees do not form part of the training requirements and are not included in the course fee. Students are responsible for applying to AMSA and meeting any current AMSA requirements for the issue of a Certificate of Competency.

Online Learning Requirements:

Entry Requirements:

• Minimum age of 16 years
• English language, literacy, and numeracy skills suitable for the course level
• Ability to complete online components prior to practical assessment

Admission Conditions:

• Completed enrolment form and full payment, or approved payment plan
• Submission of ID and any required supporting documents
• Agreement to the Student Code of Conduct and Terms of Enrolment

Course Delivery:

• Theory is completed online via our secure learning portal
• Students are required to complete the online learning components before attending practical training and assessment, to support the best possible learning outcome
• Practical training and assessment are delivered face-to-face by experienced trainers

Assessment Process:

• Knowledge assessments are completed online through quizzes and written tasks
• Practical assessments are completed in class as part of the evaluation process
• Students must demonstrate competency across both theory and practical tasks

Course Materials Provided:

• Digital resources and theory modules are provided online via the learning portal
• Hard copy learning resources are supplied during classroom and practical workshops
• Trainer support is available by email, phone, online sessions, in-person meetings and during workshops

Licensing & Regulatory Information

This course leads to the Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency under Marine Order 505, issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

To be eligible, you must complete the following eight core accredited units:

• MARC037 – Operate inboard and outboard motors
• MARF027 – Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment
• MARF028 – Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
• MARF029 – Meet work health and safety requirements
• MARI003 – Comply with regulations for safe operation of a vessel up to 12 metres
• MARJ006 – Follow environmental work practices
• MARK007 – Handle a vessel up to 12 metres
• MARN008 – Apply seamanship skills aboard a vessel up to 12 metres

Also required:

• HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid (must be completed externally and submitted)

Once all components are completed, you’ll receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for MAR10418 Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal).

Please note: To obtain your final AMSA licence, you’ll also need to complete the AMPA (AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment), hold valid sea service, and pass a medical (AMSA Form 1850).
