1. Online course

Online Theory Course Access

Once your course booking is confirmed, you’ll receive an email from your trainer with a link to your online theory training.

The online course takes approximately 3–4 hours to complete and covers all the essential theory required for your assessment. A practice quiz is included at the end to help you test your knowledge and prepare with confidence.

2. Theory Assessment

Theory Assessment Requirements

The theory assessment consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. To be deemed competent, Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) requires students to achieve a 100% score.

If any questions are answered incorrectly, students must complete targeted revision in those areas before being given a second opportunity to attempt the incorrect questions.

Should the second attempt also be unsuccessful, the student will be marked as “Not Yet Competent” and will be required to complete further training and reattempt the assessment on another day.

3. Practical Assessment

Practical Assessment Overview

To successfully complete the practical assessment, students must demonstrate competency in all required manoeuvres without any assistance or guidance from the trainer.

We strongly recommend practicing the following manoeuvres with a licensed individual in your own time:

  • Man overboard drill
  • Safe approach to a floating object
  • Port and starboard turns (on and off the plane)
  • Figure 8 manoeuvre (on and off the plane)
  • Berthing and unberthing
  • General vessel navigation and control
  • Operating at 6 knots or less

Students will have the opportunity to rehearse each of these manoeuvres prior to the formal assessment.

For those seeking additional hands-on time, we recommend enrolling in our Practical Training Course or Refresher Course, as assessment day practice time is limited.

The fee for re-sitting the practical assessment is $150.

If a student is deemed Not Yet Competent, your trainer will provide guidance on the next steps, including further training and reassessment.

4. Licence application

Certificate & Licensing Process

Once you have successfully completed all assessments, your trainer will issue you a Certificate of Competency.

This certificate must be presented at a Queensland Transport office to process and obtain your relevant marine licence.

2. Theory Assessment

Theory Assessment Requirements

The theory assessment consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. To pass, Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) requires a score of 100%.

If any questions are answered incorrectly, the student will receive additional support in those areas and will have the opportunity to attempt those questions again.

Should the second attempt be unsuccessful, the student will be marked as Not Yet Competent and will need to complete further training and resit the assessment on a different day.

3. Practical Assessment

Practical Assessment Requirements

To pass the practical assessment, students must successfully complete all required manoeuvres without assistance or guidance from the trainer.

We recommend practising the following manoeuvres on a jetski with a licensed operator in your own time:

  • Man overboard drill
  • Safe approach to a floating object
  • Port and starboard turns (on and off the plane)
  • Figure 8 manoeuvre (on and off the plane)
  • Berthing and unberthing
  • General navigation and vessel control

Students will have an opportunity to practise each manoeuvre prior to their formal assessment.

For those wanting additional hands-on time, we recommend enrolling in our Practical Training Course or Refresher Course, as practice time is limited on assessment day.

The fee to resit the practical test is $150.

If a student is deemed Not Yet Competent, the trainer will outline options for further training and reassessment.

4. Licence application

First Aid & CPR

🩺 Why First Aid & CPR Training Matters for Boaters and Jetski Operators

You’ve taken the first step by getting your boat and jetski licence — but the water can be unpredictable, and being truly prepared means knowing what to do in an emergency.

Whether you’re out for a quiet cruise or powering across the waves, accidents can happen fast — and help may not always be nearby. That’s why First Aid and CPR training is an essential next step for anyone operating on the water.

With this training, you’ll gain the confidence to:

  • Respond quickly to injuries or medical incidents
  • Assist someone who’s unconscious, choking, or not breathing
  • Handle marine-related injuries like cuts, falls, or heat-related illness
  • Make smart, potentially life-saving decisions while waiting for help

Many marine professionals and responsible skippers see First Aid & CPR as just as important as knowing how to steer a vessel — because in a real emergency, those skills could save a mate’s life.

Stay safe. Stay in control. Be the person who knows what to do when it matters most.

Ask us how you can add First Aid & CPR training to your marine course today.
